Measuring objects and structures by laser scanning generates very large quantities of data which require special evaluation methods to be processed. Fraunhofer IPM uses very fast and flexible Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and special implementation methods on the basis of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to evaluate laserscan data. This results in registered and referenced three-dimensional point clouds which can be further-processed as required by the relevant application. Both own, generally »open«, formats and also freely available formats (e.g. LAS) are used as data interface.
