Our topic: Elastocalorics

Elastocaloric materials are known as "shape-memory alloys" from various applications. With these alloys, the input of heat induces a change in shape. The reverse effect can also be used: Reversible heat is generated by applying force to the material. Through intelligent system integration, this effect can be used to realize efficient cooling systems without harmful refrigerants. Researchers at Fraunhofer IPM are currently working on the development of such a cooling system, combining the excellent properties of elastocaloric materials with the highly efficient heat transfer of heat pipes.
