Intelligent production: research project started to look at better ways to process measurement data

The use of »big data« to optimize production processes is the aim of the »Production Intelligence« research project led by Freiburg-based Jedox AG and involving Fraunhofer IPM and industrial partners.

The »Production Intelligence« project funded by the BMBF is led by Jedox AG and includes measuring technology and software experts from the worlds of research and industry who are aiming to use measurement data to improve production processes. The industrial partners involved in the project are Carl Zeiss OIM GmbH, automotive supplier Fischer IMF and sensor manufacturer Micronas. The aim of the two-and-a-half-year project is to improve the evaluation of measurement data from production processes to provide automatic feedback for the production process itself. Ever larger volumes of measurement data will have to be evaluated in real-time using powerful software in the future to optimize processes and improve quality in industrial production. Close cooperation between measuring technology and software experts from the worlds of research and industry will allow the project to identify the potential for intelligent production in the sense of Industry 4.0. In addition to software house Jedox AG, test system integrator Carl Zeiss OIM GmbH, automotive supplier Fischer IMF and sensor manufacturer Micronas are the industrial partners involved in the project.

»This project will enable us to take a very close look at the interfaces between Jedox software and measuring equipment,« says Dr. Daniel Carl, who is responsible for the project at IPM. »If large volumes of data are generated in a short period of time and this allows conclusions to be drawn for controlling the process, this is primarily a challenge for the data analysis process.« As far as Jedox CTO Matthias Krämer is concerned, the approval of the project underlines the massive potential of data analytics for optimizing production processes. »We will drive forward the developments in inline measuring equipment using the bundled expertise,« says Krämer.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the research project with a total of one million euros as part of its »KMU-innovativ: Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik« initiative to sponsor information and communication technology projects (grant agreement 01IS15011). The project executive manager is the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
