International Meeting on Chemical Sensors 2025, IMCS 2025
All eyes on chemical sensors: Fraunhofer IPM hosted the IMCS 2025
The International Meeting on Chemical Sensors took place in Freiburg, Germany, from June 22 to 26. Over 300 experts from research and industry gathered to discuss scientific advances and industrial applications in chemical sensor technology.

This year's IMCS in Freiburg featured biosensors for monitoring bodily functions, MEMS and NEMS sensors for high-precision detection of trace gases, and lab-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip applications for medicine and climate research. These are just a few of the event's many highlights, which took place at the Freiburg Konzerthaus under the direction of Fraunhofer IPM. Over the course of four days, researchers and industry representatives from around the world presented innovations and future applications in the field of chemical sensors. The presentations covered the full range of chemical sensor technology, from electrochemical and metal oxide sensors to biosensors, nanosensors, MEMS/NEMS sensors, and lab-on-chip systems to sensor materials, simulations, and data analysis. In addition to the presentations, there were two poster sessions and an industry exhibition. IMCS 2025 also offered great networking opportunities, including a kickoff event at Fraunhofer IPM and several evening events.
“We are proud to have hosted this prestigious conference in Freiburg," said conference chair Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wöllenstein, who is the head of department at Fraunhofer IPM and a Professor at the Department of Microsystems Engineering IMTEK at the University of Freiburg. "When so many experts come together, it opens up a wide range of perspectives. This is tremendously inspiring for our research.”
Since 1983, the IMCS has been held every two years in different cities around the world. The next conference is scheduled for July 2027 in Montreal, Canada.
