Doctorate with Fraunhofer IPM

General Information about a Doctorate with Fraunhofer

If you do your doctorate with Fraunhofer, you are integrated into the institutes – you are part of a department and work on your doctoral project within it. In addition, you will usually work on other research projects that are thematically related to your doctorate, so that you can also establish contacts in industry.

The doctorate is carried out at a cooperating university, at Fraunhofer IPM usually at the University of Freiburg, with which there is a strong connection (take a look at Professorships). Doctoral degrees are awarded in accordance with the regulations in force at the university in question. Doctoral candidates and prospective doctoral candidates can find out more about a doctorate with Fraunhofer with the help of the Code of Conduct.

The qualification of doctoral candidates is very important for Fraunhofer. All employees have the opportunity to participate in the Fraunhofer Training Program. Doctoral candidates at Fraunhofer IPM can additionally participate in our doctoral program.

Our doctoral program

Our doctoral program offers early career researchers the best research conditions and a wide range of support during their doctorate. This includes individual supervision by our researchers as well as regular seminars on scientific methodology. The training for our doctoral candidates also includes courses on supplementary skills such as writing scientific articles for specialist publications, rhetoric skills and presentation techniques.

Each year, every doctoral candidate presents the current status of their work to an audience of doctoral candidates and supervisors. This provides practice at holding scientific presentations and encourages exchange between doctoral candidates at the institute.

Our research equipment

The equipment and infrastructure at Fraunhofer IPM are state-of-the-art and enable doctoral candidates to carry out high-quality scientific work.

Successful doctorates

Our young scientists are regularly recognized for their exceptional performance – for example with the Hugo Geiger Prize, awarded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs for outstanding doctoral achievements in the field of applied research. Exceptional Master’s theses have also been acknowledged – and the recipients then went on to successfully complete their doctorates.
