Sensors for online monitoring of hydrogen purity

Fraunhofer IPM is developing sensor technology for the continuous monitoring of hydrogen purity as part of the GRID_FUSE research project, which started in June. The goal is to create a cost-effective sensor array combining multiple measurement methods to detect impurities in the sub-ppm range.

Digital holographic sensor integrated into a coordinate measuring machine for the first time ever

Coordinate measurement technology is evolving from purely tactile devices to multisensor systems. For the first time worldwide, researchers at Fraunhofer IPM have fully integrated a high-precision digital holographic sensor into a coordinate measuring machine. Combining the flexibility of tactile measurements with the high speed and precision of digital holography promises new possibilities for inspecting the quality of precision components.

Fast, reliable detection of trace gases by resonant photoacoustics

The precise measurement of trace gases plays a key role in climate protection, industrial processes and the safety of critical infrastructure. This previously required large, expensive equipment. By further developing a well-known measurement method to be suitable for industrial use, a team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM has now succeeded in implementing highly sensitive gas sensor technology in a robust and compact format—at a fraction of the previous cost. Their efforts have earned the researchers the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for 2026.

Qurie, a Freiburg-based startup, is entering the market with caloric cooling technology

A team led by researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM has developed a new technological concept that is expected to transform the cooling systems market. Founded in 2026, Qurie GmbH develops solid-state heat pumps based on electrocaloric materials.
